End of an era: a villanelle

They looked happy, safe behind their rampart,

Pictures of laughs. Guess what? We didn’t know;

They weren’t; so much sadness to see them part.

Can years suffice to grow worlds so apart?

We ask – can kids, routine, make such love go,

Thinking yourself safe behind your rampart?

Did they stop dreaming, talking, though they’re smart?

We ask – do they ponder where life can go,

While we are left sadly watching them part?

Could we all lose our family, our chart?

We ask – so many years, so long ago,

They were happy, safe behind their rampart.

Have they gone blind, deaf; did one give his heart?

We ask – how are the kids taking the blow,

When all are sad and stunned to see them part?

Maybe they’re brave, trying for a new start,

Hoping for fresh choices; what will time show?

They looked happy, safe behind their rampart;

They weren’t; so much sadness to see them part.
